Hyacinths
They are known as Anodorhynchus hyacinthinus |
|
|
| At times the Hyacinth can be a very noisy
bird. However, it is somewhat placid in comparison with other
large Macaws. They are inquisitive in nature and quickly become
confiding, docile and extremely loving birds. They are hard
chewers and often destructive. They have been known to chew
through steel gauge bars, which can make accommodation difficult.
A regular supply of thick branches and tree stumps must be
provided to eliminate issues problematic of their chewing
nature. They bathe frequently in the summer and enjoy being
sprayed or misted.
The Hyacinth is the largest of all Macaws -
growing three-and-a-half to four feet in length.
They are only common in few areas with original
habitat. They have disappeared from greater parts of distribution
areas and area regarded as endangered. Population is possibly
less than twenty-five hundred birds. What a shame for this
breathtaking species.
